Open School Locations:

Second Creek:

Almost all of the residents scavenge from the dump for a living, selling paper, plastic and scrap metal. While they can make a substantial amount of money, much of this is spent on drugs and alcohol. Shack fires, food poisoning, accidents and AIDS-related illnesses result in many deaths, especially among children. Rape, assault and general abuse (again children are the prime victims) go unreported. Emergency services will not attend to a call in this area without police escort. Begun in March 2007, 40 children of all ages now attend the Open School and are taught by 4 volunteers.

Duncan Village:

This is a high crime area of East London close to Second Creek. Started in December 2007, 7 volunteers currently operate Open School and a soup kitchen. Four boys who don't attend normal school have now joined, while the others receive extra lessons.

Abbotsford Christian School:

Operates an evening Open School for children from the neighboring Nompumelelo Township. On average 25 children attend classes. While many go to normal school, there are at least 4 who do not. There are 5 volunteers.

Mdantsane:

This is the second largest township in South Africa (Soweto being the largest) with a diverse population across the economic spectrum. Drug and alcohol abuse is high in the area. One volunteer was operating from a local school but is now looking for an alternate venue.

Buffalo Flats (including surrounding areas):

This is a predominantly coloured area. Drug and alcohol abuse is common. The Buffalo Flats Support Group for Drug & Alcohol Abuse is working with Open Schools Worldwide to rehabilitate "Street Kids".

Shoshanguve – North of Pretoria

Annamarie Jacobs with the Doxa Deo team from Pretoria is using the Open School resources to assist Aids orphans in the Shoshanguve area. The team of about 20 youth regularly meet with about 60 orphaned children from this community.

Hammanskraal

Open School Worldwide seeks to complement the State school program. South Africa has an Adult Basic Education program that seeks to address the issue of literacy for Adults. Our first student to go into the Adult Basic Education program is a 13 year of who could not go to school. Jane was abandoned by the mother and never received any formal education. An open school project in Sekampaneng, north of Pretoria was started to help her and other 15 year olds. She has progressed so well that she was accepted into the ABET program and has a opportunity to further her education.

Temba

The Ikakaneng Community project accommodates about 50 orphan children in basic facilities. They also feed about 200 children at risk from the impoverished community on a daily basis. This was part of a former self governing Bantustan state from the old South Africa. The political changes resulted in many firms in the area closing down. This resulted in an unemployment rate that is over 60% and brought a sharp increase in poverty. There are many unschooled children in this community; therefore we will be starting an Open School project here to provide them with a bridging education. The Department of Education of this area has committed to placing them into school in the New Year. We started with the training of volunteers on 8 September.

Johanna is a 13 year old who cannot even write her name and her sister is 8 years old and cannot read as well. They are amongst the 5 children that will be our first Open School group in Temba. There are many others and this project is expected to grow quickly as we find more volunteers.

Central Johannesburg – Wits Tutorial College and the Jabulani Kakibos Street Kids

These Street children are accommodated in a project that seeks to restore them to their families. We have trained volunteers from the Wits Tutorial College to provide educational support and ministry to these children. 8 former street children now have been accepted as students at Wits and are being sponsored by the Methodist Church of South Africa in Johannesburg.

“Changing the world, one life at a time”. To achieve this we endeavor to make measurable and meaningful interventions in the lives of young South Africans in order to precipitate change and give tangible and material expression to the notion of possibility.

Open School Locations:

Philippi Community Preventative Projects (Egoli)

This project serves the people of Philippi’s farming community. The project leader is Charlotte Stanfield. Charlotte is a qualified teacher who has been called to work with the almost forgotten Philippi community. Besides preparing children for mainstream schools, Charlotte and her team also works with street kids and runs an adult literacy programme. For the 2009 academic year, we have enrolled 42 learners at mainstream school,i.e. 14 Grade R learners, 9 Grade 1 learners, 19 Grade 3-7 learners. These learners were place at a partner school, Die Duine Primary School. Mrs. Kiewit (principal) is a strong supporter of the Open School programme. Charlotte and her team will work with an additional 66 learners this year, preparing them for 2010 school placements. The main challenge for Charlotte and her team is the issue of transport. The Kombi dedicated to the project for getting learners to school and the centre was hi-jacked. Charlotte is currently using her own transport to get learners from Philippi (Egoli) to school.

Philippi (Olieboom)

This project serves 46 farming families. 21 learners were placed at for the 2009 academic year. These learners were placed at Die Duine Primary School in Lotus River. The principal and staff of Die Duine are avid supporters of Open Schools. The staff financially support all learners placed at their school through Open Schools. They supply all the placed learners with school uniforms, stationery and school fees. However, transporting the learners to school is a challenge as the school’s Kombi was stolen.

Fellowship Bible Church Christian School

This school is currently in the process of registering with the Department of Education, Western Cape. The school serves the farming community of Philippi (Jobs Vlei). This year we endeavor to start not only extend the literacy levels of learners but parents as well. Philippi is a predominately  Afrikaans speaking community. Monique Malan, an educator at the school will be heading up this project.

Rehoboth Wellness Centre (Bishop Lavis)

Our project leader Charney Harley is responsible for overseeing the reading programme at Hillside Primary School. We have trained parents from the school to assist with the school’s reading programme. Open School complements the Department of Education’s reading programme. Parents trained by Open Schools often become teacher aids at schools. Learners who are part of the reading programme are tracked to monitor progress. More parents will be trained for the 2009 academic year.

Thomas Wildschutt Junior Primary (Retreat)

Parents were trained to assist with the reading programme. All learners on this programme are tracked to monitor progress made. The principal Mrs. Sandra Daniels (St Cyprian’s Anglican Church) oversees the programme. Parents that were trained are regularly used as teacher aids. More parents will be trained for the 2009 academic year.

The Lighthouse Centre of Learning (LCL)

This school serves as my host school and has been a tower of strength to me. Open Schools Western Cape is driven by the support of Suritha Kaminsky (principal and co-ordinator ACSI, Western Cape) and her staff together with her husband Keith. The learners were trained last year and this year we endeavor to work with children-at-risk in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town.

Westridge Baptist Church, Mitchells Plain

They have a strong community development programme. They have their own youth centre where they assist learners with homework and life skills. Neil van Niekerk heads up the schools work in the Mitchells Plain area. For the 2009 academic year our Destiny programme will be implemented as an intervention programmme at some of the high schools in Westridge. It is also the desire of Rev. John Pascoe to establish a Christian School in Mitchells Plain. We are trusting God that this will come to fruition.

Samora Machel

This township is on the outskirts of Mitchells Plain. Mirriam started a pre-school for parents who could not afford to send their children to a paying pre-school. Mirriam has some children who has been infected or affected by HIV / Aids. The staff has been trained to run an Open School and support is ongoing. More volunteers will be trained this year. Atlantic Christian Assembly (ACA, Life Church) in Sea Point are the project leaders.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Open Schools Worldwide, Western Cape is support by schools relating to ACSI.

El Shaddai Christian School in Durbanville had their Grade 12 learners trained in the Open School Destiny programme and ran a three day Outreach at Ons Plek shelter for girls. The learners also donated groceries and toiletries for the girls. This year El Shaddai would like to extend the Open School project to a local community in their area. Mrs Karen Roux is the project leader at El Shaddai Christian School.

Our three high school placements passed well at the end of year and we continue to trust that they would grow from strength to strength as they inspire others around them. This year we have a young man completing the last of his three subjects required to get his National Senior Certificate (Matric). Our one placement (placed in November 2008) at the Ottery Youth Care Centre (place of safety) started his schooling this year after being out of the schooling system for two years. Open Schools, Western Cape has also secured funding for a Grade 12 learner (at an ACSI school) to complete her Matric year without having the burden of financial strain.

Possible Open Schools starting in 2009 s Somerset West / Grabouw, Eston (about 2 hours out of Cape Town), Blue Downs / Delft, Atlantis, Manenberg and Kimberley (Northern Cape).

I find it a privilege to be part of Open Schools Worldwide, Western Cape. I thank God for the opportunity He has given me to impact the lives of young South Africans. Our partners of Open Schools in the Western Cape has shown great courage in the face of adversity. We believe that every child can be reached. My mentor, Rev. Colin Forgus (together with his wife) has come alongside Claudine (my wife) and myself and has been a real blessing to us.

Should you wish to find out more regarding Children-at-Risk or how you could get involved and make a difference in your community please call or write to us on the above mentioned details.
